"I flew through this book and massively resented anything that took me away from it. Ink Blood Sister Scribe is a magical book about magic books that had me spellbound from start to finish."

Synopsis

For generations, the Kalotay family has guarded a collection of ancient and rare books—books that let a person walk through walls or manipulate the elements, books of magic that half-sisters Joanna and Esther have been raised to revere and protect. All magic comes with a price, though, and for years the sisters have been separated. Esther has fled to a remote base in Antarctica to escape the fate that killed her own mother, moving locations every year on November 2nd to stay alive. Joanna has isolated herself in their family home in Vermont, devoting her life to the study of these cherished volumes and maintaining the magical wards that keep their collection hidden. When their father dies suddenly while reading a book Joanna has never seen before, the sisters must reunite to preserve their family legacy. In the process, they'll uncover a world of magic far bigger and more dangerous than they ever imagined, and all the secrets their parents kept hidden—secrets that span centuries, continents, and even other libraries.

Our Take

Emma Törzs' stunning debut is a love letter to bibliophiles everywhere, weaving fantasy, thriller, and dark academia into an utterly enchanting page-turner. What sets Ink Blood Sister Scribe apart is its brilliantly simple yet unique magic system—spells written in blood that hum and buzz with power, some granting the ability to speak through mirrors, others to float, and some deadly enough to kill. Törzs masterfully balances light and dark, infusing scenes of genuine peril—blood magic, murder, torture—with moments of warmth, humor, and found family that make the journey feel comforting rather than oppressive. The relationship between estranged sisters Joanna and Esther is wonderfully rendered, their reunion both tender and fraught as they navigate years of separation and the weight of family secrets. Törzs pulls off twist after expert twist, keeping readers frantically turning pages while staying grounded in deeply emotional character work. For fans who devoured Alix E. Harrow's The Once and Future Witches or swooned over the dark library secrets in Olivie Blake's The Atlas Six, this book delivers that same intoxicating blend of magic and mystery. A Good Morning America Book Club Pick and critically acclaimed debut, Ink Blood Sister Scribe is downright irresistible—the kind of book that makes you cancel plans until you reach the final page.
